There are two main reasons why you must have a good crib mattress. First of all, it offers more comfort to your baby and second but not least, it gives a lot more support for their tender growing bones. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, making use of a hard mattress rather than a soft one is one of the major contributing factors in preventing SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Making use of a custom baby crib mattress is vital. You cannot adapt a mattress meant for adults or older kids for an infant baby, and it definitely won’t be firm enough for them. Babies spend a lot of time sleeping and this time will be on the crib mattress. This alone is enough reason for you to get the best baby mattress.

Types of Crib Mattresses

Foam Crib Mattresses

The popular foam mattresses form the 80s and earlier used to be of low-quality foam which would more or less disintegrate over time as they become brittle. This is due mainly to prolonged use. Luckily, that Is no longer the case as there have been several advancements in technology over the years. A foam that is manufactured in the proper way should be free of this defect. You have to be careful though not to go for the cheaper option from an unknown manufacturer as you are bound to regret it in the future.

Another thing you have to look out for are foam mattresses that are manufactured with cheap packing foam just to cut down on cost. This kind of foam mattresses is bound to deteriorate over time. Foam mattresses designed specifically for us a mattress are good enough.

Typically, foam mattresses cost a lot less than the innerspring mattresses, and this can sometimes sway people into opting for the foam mattresses for their baby cribs. Another advantage to the foam mattresses is that they are lightweight and are almost always lighter than the innerspring mattresses. The heaviest foam mattress weighs around 8 to 10 pounds while the heaviest innerspring mattress can weigh as high as 25 pounds.

When buying a foam mattress, look out for the following:

Density: the general rule of thumb here is that the denser the foam, the better it is and generally the firmer. This is perhaps the most important feature of the mattress. The firmer the crib, the better and safer it is for the baby. Unfortunately, some manufacturers do not relay this information in their product information page. You can estimate for yourself when in the store by carrying out a squeeze test. This is done by pressing your hands together on each side of the mattress and see how much of a squeeze you can get. A mattress with good density won let you go far with your squeezing, and a lighter one will offer less resistance.

Weight: a heavy mattress is better than a lighter one, but you must also consider the fact that you will be lifting it to change the sheets periodically. You must find a balance for the weight that works best for you. Luckily most of the foam mattresses out there are lighter than the inner spring ones.

Innerspring Crib Mattresses

Even as an adult, you are sure to get used to sleeping on an innerspring mattress. They have springs built into them or coils and are a lot more complex when compared to the foam mattresses. They are also often more expensive and heavier than the foam mattresses. One of the biggest myths about the innerspring mattresses is that the more coils it has within it, the better. A lot of people have so much believed in this, and a lot of other websites will also tell you it is very important. The number of coils will affect the density of the mattress, but many other factors must be considered.

Generally, the more metal you have in an innerspring mattress, the better and according to consumer reports, you should be looking at a crib mattress with between 135 to 150 coils with a gauge of 15.5 or lesser.

You must have it at the back of your mind that the innerspring mattress is usually more expensive than a foam mattress and on top of that, they weight a lot more. If you are picking out an innerspring mattress, these are a few things you must consider.

It doesn’t necessarily get better with a price: innerspring mattresses are already very expensive compared to the foam mattresses, but you need to keep in mind that the pricier ones are not automatically the best ones.

Coils: Pick a mattress with about 135 to 150 coils and a gauge of 15.5 or lower.

Border rods: these rods wrap around the perimeter roof the mattress at the top and bottom, and they provide extra stability and support to prevent sagging when the baby is near the edge of the bed. These are a must-have when picking out a mattress.

Organic Crib Mattresses

Organic cot mattresses are gaining popularity the world over mainly due to their focus on making sure your child is safe from all the bad chemicals a lot of people are exposed to today. Although there is still research ongoing in this subject, folks who are pro-organic have agreed that non-organic products expose your child to risk and may contain materials such as polyester fabric, vinyl, and petrochemical foams. All of these things can be harmful to your child.

Fire retardants and glue have been found to be detrimental to our, and these are some things you might find in non-organic mattresses, and this can pose a serious threat to your child’s health. Some people, on the other hand, do not believe that organic mattresses are that much safer than the non-organic ones. Mattresses are generally eco-friendly these days. Always do your research and look closely at the product description before making a choice on which to buy.

Things to Consider When Picking Out The Best Crib Mattress

When you go out to select a crib mattress, there are some things you must consider and certain features you must keep an eye out for. Some of the most important factors to consider will be highlighted below:

Foam vs. Innerspring: this might not necessarily be top of your checklist, but it is important nonetheless. It is highly recommended you go for the best foam mattress.

Check the size of the mattress: there is no standard right or wrong size, but there are some considerations and recommendations. The smallest size put forth by the government ranges between 27 5/8” to 28 5/8” width and 51 ¾” to 53” in length. The minimum size should be around 27 ¼” x 51 5/8,” and the bedding should be no more than 6 inches in thickness. The goal here is to ensure the mattress fits the crib snug or semi snug. The depth of the mattress can vary between 5 to 6 inches for the coil variant and 4 to 6 inches for the foam based products. The rule of thumb is that a gap more than two fingers indicates a small mattress.

The firmer, the better: it is a common misconception that a softer mattress is always better and this couldn’t be further off the truth when it comes to baby mattresses. A baby mattress has to be firm. A soft mattress is susceptible to caving when weight is placed on it, and your baby can sink a little into the mattress, and this makes it difficult for them to switch positions.

Support: it is recommended that babies sleep laying on their backs as they find it easier to breathe in this position. This is very important to reduce the risk of SIDS. There is a very real danger of suffocation when a baby sleeps on its stomach. With a supportive mattress, babies can lay on their backs and remain in that position throughout their sleep. With a soft mattress, there is a risk of the child rolling onto his or her stomach.

Waterproof and machine washable cover: one thing is unavoidable with babies, and that is pee and poop. They are going to do their business everywhere, and the crib mattress is no exception. It is very important that the crib mattress you have is both waterproof and machine washable. You will be making a very big mistake if it isn’t.

Vinyl covers for crib mattresses will make some squeaking noises whenever the baby rolls around in the bed, and this can disrupt sleep. Covers made out of cloth are more silent. On this same note when you compare foam mattresses and spring based mattresses, you get quieter when you opt for the foam mattresses.

Breathability and Temperature regulation: overheating is a major concern when it comes to SIDS, and it is thus essential for parents to keep an eye out for mattresses that can self-regulate temperature. This feature of mattresses is directly related to their breathability most especially the cover. For instance, cloth covers tend to retain more heat compared to vinyl covers, but at the same time, they are more breathable even though the vinyl covers are perforated for improved breathability.

Edge Support: some of the crib mattresses in the market today do not have reinforcement along the edges for support. This will result in the edges sinking when a baby rolls over, and this increases the risk of physical injury and even worse suffocation. This also poses a threat to babies standing on the edges of the cribs. Because of this, you must ensure that the mattress you pick fits snugly inside the crib and at the same time the edges don’t sink in too deeply.

Weight: it might prove a little more difficult to remove the crib for models that are heavier than average. This becomes a problem when you are trying to clean or change the sheet. A lot of the crib mattresses weight less than 20 pounds with foam mattresses on the lightest side of the spectrum closely followed by innersprings.

Compliance Standards: some specific standards and requirements must be met by all crib mattresses if they are to be sold in the United States. The first one here is a standard from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and American Society for Testing and Materials. There is also a regulation for cot bed standard sizes set by the consumer product safety improvement act of 2008 (CPSIA). A lot of manufacturers claim that their beds are eco-friendly and safe for the environment, but you must be vigilant and confirm that they have the certification called the Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This standard is known all over the world, and it is aimed at ensuring safety and compliance with chemical and other stipulations.

Cost: this is perhaps one of the more important factors to consider because you cannot opt for a brand outside of your purchasing power. There are many lines that you can transverse when it comes to cost, and even though you are on a tight budget, you will find a suitable baby crib mattress. They aren’t overly expensive. It becomes expensive when you decide to opt for a specialty crib mattress.

Warranty: you will find some mattresses with a very long duration of warranty sometimes running up to the 25-year mark. This is mainly there to convince consumers to choose their product and stick with it. This is not something you should pay any serious attention to because it rarely determines how quality the mattress is.

How to Maintain a Crib Mattress

Regardless of the kind of crib mattress you opt for, there are certain guidelines you must follow when maintaining your mattress to ensure that you continue getting the best value from them in years to follow. Some of the more important ones are highlighted below:

Place your baby on the bed on its back: try to leave the crib bare and avoid putting other beddings inside it.  Inclusive in the list of things to leave out of the crib are blankets, pillows, stuffed toys or bumpers. From the guidelines detailed by the AAP and CPSC, it is clear that in order to reduce the risk of entrapment, suffocation, and strangulation, infants should be placed on firm mattresses with a fitted sheet and no harmful fixture inside or around the crib. It is very dangerous to place infants on an adult-sized bed, couch or armchair when they sleep.

Two finger test: Your mattress must pass the two-finger test. This test measures the space between the sides of the crib and the mattress. The optimal size is two fingers or less.

Flip when the time is right: if you have the dual sided mattress, you want to have your child sleeping on the firm side until they are between 9 to 12 months old before flipping him/her over. You want to ensure they have neck control and are mobile and you probably should check with your pediatrician before making the switch.

Use fitted sheets to protect your mattress: some crib mattresses do not have the waterproof cover so you might want to consider protecting them with sheets. In the likely event of a spill or diaper leak, the mattress will not be in direct contact with any organic material.

Read the instructions: every mattress comes with instructions and guidelines on how to best care for them as they all have their own peculiarities. You want to make sure to read these instructions carefully to know how best to take care of them. Ensure the mattress is always clean and dry when you lay a new sheet on. This prevents bacteria and mold from growing on them. For mattresses that aren’t waterproof, you should get a cotton cover. Just ensure you are conversant with their care guidelines of the mattress that you own.

Look out for indents: Mattresses tend to cave to pressure after prolonged use, and they end up losing some of their firmness. You have to watch out for these indentations because they pose a serious threat to your child. The AAP strongly recommends against it because your child might be in a face-down position or roll over and be exposed to rebreathing and suffocation risks.

Store properly: if you wish to save your crib mattress for a future child, please ensure that you store it properly in a clean, dry and cool place so that bacteria and mildew don’t grow on its surface.

Never Buy a Used Crib Mattress

There is a lot of risks that come with buying used crib mattresses, and it is generally not advisable to go this rout. Some people know what they are looking for and are fine but studies have shown a correlation between using old crib mattresses and increased risk of SIDS. According to a research study published in 2002 by the British Medical Journal, there was a “…valid statistical associated between sudden infant death syndrome and the use of an infant mattress previously used by another child…” and it is not recommended that you allow your baby sleep on a used mattress.

There are also other reasons why you shouldn’t use a used crib mattress. Somewhere at the top of that list is the fact that they are unsanitary. As you know, a lot of spills and poop can make its way to a crib mattress, and you can’t be sure how well the previous owners took care of the mattress. You might also be dealing with dust mites and even bed bugs on a poorly treated crib mattress.

Also, crib mattresses deteriorate with age, and a used one may not have much more life left in it. When the mattress starts to sag under pressure and loses support, it really serves no use anymore.

Try as much as possible to stay away from hand me downs. You can use your old mattresses when you have a second child since you are certain of the condition you left it and you took care of it yourself.

SIDS and Crib Mattress Selection

There have been reported incidents of children dying in the sleep without any obvious cause or reason, and this has been tagged SIDS. You need to make sure the space your baby sleeps in is the best you can find as SIDS has taken the lives of over 2000 newborns and infants on an annual basis. It is one of the leading cause of death in babies between one month and one year.

We do not know for sure what causes this, but there are various factors that have been documented to put babies at risk. These are the most vulnerable groups:

Babies with brain problems. Especially those with issues in those parts of the brain that handle breathing and being awake.

Underweight babies. In these cases, the baby is not mature enough to regulate its own breathing and heart rate.

Babies with problems in their respiratory system.

There are also environmental factors that can increase the risk of SIDS in your babies:

Babies who sleep on their stomach are more susceptible to suffocating, and if they sleep on their sides, it is very easy for them to roll banc unto their stomach. The best position for them to sleep in is on their backs.

It is dangerous for babies to sleep on softer mattresses, if they happen to roll onto their stomachs, a softer mattress makes it a lot more difficult for them to maneuver and they are at a higher risk of suffocating. A firm mattress is highly recommended.

Babies who sleep in the same rooms with their parents but on their own cribs have a lower risk of SIDS.

Additional risk factors:

  • Babies that overheat
  • There is a higher risk of SIDS in male infants than female infants
  • Babies between 2 months and 4 months have a higher risk of SIDS
  • Higher risk in babies who have a relative who has died from SIDS
  • Second-hand smoke increases the risk of SIDS in babies.

Parents have a big role to play in reducing the risk of SIDS in their infant babies by following some of these precautionary measures:

Ensure your babies sleep on their backs. When they are over a year old and stronger, they can then sleep on their stomachs as they are able to move easily.

The firmer the mattress, the better. A firmer mattress is better at protecting your baby from SIDS, and it is also advisable that you do not place other fixtures in the bed with them such as blankets, quilts, etc. these things can affect their breathing

Ensure proper temperature regulation. Babies should be warm in their cribs, but you have to be careful about overheating as this poses a SIDS risk. Dress your baby in layers when the weather is chilly. Instead of using loose blankets, you can use a sleep sack and make sure never to cover the baby’s head and face.

It is better for babies to sleep in the same room as the parents but never on the bed with them. At least for the first 12 months

Breastfeeding babies for at least six months can also reduce the risk of SIDS.

Pacifiers also help.

There is some indication that immunizing babies can also reduce the risk of SIDS.

Which Crib mattress is the best?

Organic mattresses are typically better, but you must make sure to read the labels carefully and conform that everything is genuinely made from natural materials

Are crib and toddler mattresses the same size?

Mostly yes. Infant mattresses usually have dual sides. One side for infant babies and the other side for toddlers

How thick should a mattress be for a newborn?

This thickness and other dimensions are stipulated by US laws. It shouldn’t be thicker than 6 inches top to bottom when laid out flat. Protection Status
