A lot of the mattresses you will find in stores are inorganic and they contain synthetic constituents made from chemical processes. When you compare, any best organic mattress is made from natural products sourced from plants and animals and these materials can be latex or foam made from the sap of the rubber tree or organic wool and cotton.
Hybrid and latex beds are popular organic mattress materials even with the prevalence of some plant based foams. Hybrid mattresses will be built with an innerspring support base with a natural layer of latex or foam on top. Some bed manufacturers will advertise as natural or organic when in reality they aren’t 100% natural. Why Buy An Organic Mattress?
The words organic and completely natural are very popular right now and consumers have shown an increased interest in these kind of products as they have been found to be the healthier, nontoxic and most suitable for the environment. For most people, when they hear organic, they think food before they can even begin to consider a mattress. Since what you consume is guaranteed to affect your health and longevity, going for the organic foods makes more sense.
That being said, not many people will automatically consider that the constituents of their mattress is where they sleep every night but they should. We spend about 8 hours every night on the bed and the surface of our skin rubs up on it and we breathe against its fibers. It is so clear to see that your selection of a mattress and its constituent materials will have an impact on your health.
The typical mattresses we are familiar with tend to off gas and this refers to a period of about 3 days where a new mattress will release certain odors and gases. This is a common side effect with the manufacturing and packaging process but it is very off putting. Organic mattresses however of not usually off gas and this means that you do not need to put them out to air when you first open a new one and you don’t have to worry about breathing it in every night.
Memory foam is made with polyurethane foam and it is a petroleum byproduct. If you are conscious of the environment and looking for a very sustainable product that will make a difference, this choice of bedding is a great one.
Most of the top notch organic mattresses recommended here will generally last longer than their synthetic counterparts. They will cost you a lot more initially but when you consider long term, they’re actually more affordable because they will last longer and serve you better.
One major issue with the organic mattress is the wool allergy considering many brands make use of it in their batting and comfort layers. From studies compiled by Woolmark, a long established QA brand, wool is not the allergen but an irritation comes from the weave of the cloth and chemicals that are used to treat the fabric. This shouldn’t be an issue with organic wool.
If you have an allergy to latex, you may react to natural latex manufactured from rubber tree sap even as it is an organic product so it is better you stay away from it. If you have allergies to synthetic materials, asthma or health concerns or if you are worried about the health of your kids, you should consider a more natural option in bedding and select the organic mattress.
One of the biggest appeals of an organic diet is in the absence of harmful pesticides in your food. When you eat an organic apple without a sprinkle of bug spray, it can be a very appealing feeling. This same should go for your mattress. You spend a lot of time on the bed sleeping, relaxing and whatever else you do on the bed but what exactly are you laying on?
All new mattresses are required to meet federal standards in order to prevent fire hazards but the chemicals they have to use to make the mattress fire retardant can be harmful. Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) is the main problem. This chemical is an excellent flame retardant, the long term effects of PBDE exposure are still vague. Some have the belief that exposure to this chemical will have health effects.
Other chemicals that you might find in mattress materials can be boric acid and decabromodiphenyl oxide. The former is a chemical that is found in pesticides and the latter is a chemical that is actually dangerous to your health and studies have linked it to issues in the liver, thyroid and even as deeps as neurological effects. This is all scary to anybody but mattresses can be manufactured with organic and nontoxic flame retardants that meet all the federal regulations and standards and still give you the most suitable place to lay, sleep and dream.
Non organic mattresses can include:
- Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)
- Decabromodiphenyl Oxide
- Boric Acid
- Antimony Trioxide
- Polyvinylidene Chloride
Organic amattresses can inclde:
- Certified Organic Wool (naturally fire-resistant)
- Organic Cotton (often wrapped in wool)
- Natural Latex (made from rubber trees)
What Organic Mattress Materials Can You Choose From?
There are mainly three options to choose from when it comes to mattress materials and these are innerspring, foam and latex. Hybrid beds are another option and they combine the innerspring with any of the other materials. Materials are made with two layers, the support core and the comfort layers. The core will give your spine the support it needs in a neutral position and the comfort layers contour your body and alleviate the pressures on your shoulders and hips.
You can find organic variants of these materials and these are some of the things you should know
Plant based foam is the only organic variant of the foam bed. All other types of foam such as the polyfoam and standard memory foam are made from chemical processes and synthetic materials. Plant based foams can be made from rubber trees or soy plants and many plant based foams are used in combination with other synthetic materials so that the bed will be natural to an extent but they are not really organic.
For an innerspring mattress, metal coils are used as the support core. Some of them are pocket coils which are basically springs inside fabric sleeves whereas others are just wire springs that are attached to each other via wire. Since it is metal, it can be a natural product. The cover and top padding of the bed will usually be organic cotton that can be tufted and comes with different levels of thickness that depend on the design and the firmness
Latex mattresses are excellent for those who desire the benefits of the foam mattress but do not want the chemicals and do not want to be swallowed by their mattress. These mattresses usually have excellent temperature regulating features and they are very responsive. This means that they will adjust to your body as you move around. Latex mattresses also tend to have the best durability compared to all other mattress types.
Hybrid mattresses usually refer to a combination of latex and either of the other two materials and they can include other materials and combinations as well. Hybrids will give you a good amount of balance, support and pressure relief and still offer responsiveness and temperature regulation. Motion transfer isolation will also be improved one hybrid compared to an innerspring alone. This is possible with the aid of more motion absorbing layers.
Hybrids are usually a great option for the majority of people and even if you and your significant other want something different with your mattresses, then a hybrid might be the most suitable option for you. But getting the best of both worlds will almost definitely translate to a higher cost. Hybrid mattresses can also be a lot heavier which makes it difficult to move around and handle in various cases.
Organic Materials Certification
To be classed as an organic mattress, a mattress must have the necessary certifications. You will usually see one or more of these certifications coming along with an organic mattress.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 does not give organic certification but they make sure that it does not go beyond the emission limits for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, PDBEs and allergy inducing g dyes. They also check for other dangerous chemicals that might be harmful to humans. VOCs are very common with memory foam and polyfoam and they are the culprit for the initial odor and off gassing that you find with some foam mattresses. VOCs vaporize immediately they get in contact with the air during unwrapping and unpakaging and they can be very irritating to people who have skin disorders and sensitivities.
CertiPUR-US is a certification that is provided for mattresses that have polyfoams in them and are free of harmful materials such as mercury, lead, PBDEs, formaldehyde and ozone depleters. They also possess low VOCs. The foams that are certified by CertiPUR-US aren’t required to be organic but they are certified not to contain any materials found harmful to humans
Green Guard and Green Guard Gold are extra certifications that also take into account safe VOC emission limits.
Eco-Institut gives certification for latex mattresses that do not go beyond the emission limits for harmful chemical substances.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is another certification that is issues to mattresses that are manufactured with at least 95% organic certified materials.
Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) is a certification issued to latex mattresses manufactured with at least 95% organic latex.
Cradle to Cradle is yet another certification issued for latex mattresses that checks for the environmental impact of the latex.
Without some of these certifications a mattress can still labelled natural, ecofriendly or green but in that scenario, it is very likely that at least one of the materials within it is organic but the mattress as a whole package doesn’t meet all the required standards to be considered organic.
There are also more certifications that will evaluate the organic qualities and environmental impact of the materials. If you are looking at a mattress and it has some certifications that are not included in the list above, you should find out what it means.
What Else to Consider When Selecting The Most Suitable Organic Mattress
When you are picking out a mattress, you will quickly observe how big an investment it is on your part. These mattress can be a little pricey so you want to ensure that you are getting a high quality product. Warranties are very beneficial because they give you the peace of mind you need to assure you of the longevity of the product. With a warranty, your mattress can often be repaired or replaced if you have any problems.
Some companies do not offer warranty and this is something that you need to look out for. It will not be the final determinant of which you choose but it can be an added advantage if you have warranty.
Before you go out to select a mattress, you must ensure you know what size you need. Most mattresses are available in different sizes and it can be a worthwhile venture to measure your bed and your existing mattress to be sure that your mattress will work. This might seem trivial but it is a good precaution to take.
If you have owned your bed for some time, you should consider upgrading to a better bed at the time when you are purchasing your new mattress. This can be very expensive to do at once but its excellent timing if you are looking into both upgrades.
Mattresses are available in different materials. There is no straightforward hierarchy in terms of quality bit some of them will be more comfortable to you personally. If your old mattress was made from latex, you should know if you still want another latex mattress.
You can also look at user reviews to estimate how different materials can serve you and your comfort preferences.
Some companies will give you a trial period and this is time you can use to evaluate the mattress before making your final decision. These are very helpful in ensuring that you pick the mattress that is most suitable for you and your partner. Not all mattress companies will offer you this trial period so you shouldn’t limit yourself too much. If you have the option of picking a mattress with a trial period, you should opt for that. The average trial period is 30 days but this figure varies from company to company. A few companies will even offer you trial periods as long as 12 months but they are very rare. Ensure you know exactly the terms of the trial period so that you can return the mattress on time if you need to.
Mattresses can be a very expensive purchase and you want to make sure that you are getting something that is built to last. Most people will hope to use their mattress for many years before considering a replacement.
If you want your mattress to do well, you should find one that is strong and durable. One of the best ways to do this is to research user reviews from people who have used the mattress for some time. This will help you know how well the mattress actually performs and holds up.
If you aren’t very confident in the durability of your mattress, you should consider getting a mattress cover and if you want to keep thigs organic you can go for the best organic mattress protector
Depending on who is using the new mattress, there are certain considerations to have in mind. One such example is whether a potty trained toddler is using the mattress. If this is the case you want to use a waterproof mattress. If your child is going to be using the mattress with you, you must look for the best organic crib mattress or baby organic baby mattress. If you are sharing the bed with your partner, you should go for a quiet mattress that will isolate the motion of those on the bed
What Type of Sleeper Should Buy an Organic Mattress?
Organic mattresses can be manufactured with different materials and these can be anywhere from soft to firm. Irrespective of your sleeping style, you can still find an organic mattress that will give you the support and comfort you need. The same guidelines will apply for organic mattresses. Heavier sleepers will usually require a mattress with greater firmness while side sleepers will prefer a soft and comfortable layer to cradle them. You can visit our guide to mattress cores for more information on the best kind of mattress for different sleepers
Environmentally conscious consumers
A lot of the organic mattresses are very environmentally friendly than their counterparts. Some of them substitute the plant based materials for synthetic and petroleum based chemicals and others stick to natural fibers and they get their cotton and wool from organic farms. Nonetheless it is important that you check every mattress for its certifications and be conversant with their meanings
Health conscious people
A lot of people are alarmed to learn of the potential dangers that come with some chemicals that are used in making non organic mattresses fire retardant. These materials can be heavy metals, formaldehyde and PBDEs and all of them have dangerous effects on our health if we expose ourselves too long to them.
People with allergies
For some users, inorganic mattresses compound their problems with allergy and aggravate their skin and respiratory conditions. Organic mattresses make for lower levels of volatile compounds which are the source of that initial new odor and off gassing that can be a problem for asthmatic people
People with kids
Kids are more vulnerable to harmful chemicals so it is vital that parents get mattresses that do not release any fumes
People who want durability
Organic mattresses can be expensive but they are built to last longer than any other kind of mattress. For those who want to have a mattress that will last for years, the organic mattress is the best choice
What Are the Advantages And Disadvantages of an Organic Mattress?
Natural mattresses are appealing to many users but getting one at an affordable price can be a challenge. Deciding on which one to go for based on the pros and cons will depend on how much time you want to invest in your sleep.
Durable: mattresses manufactured with natural materials have been built to outlast any other kind of mattress and they typically come with the longest warranties.
Environmentally friendly: for those users who are conscious of the environment and want to reduce their carbon footprint, these completely natural mattresses with low emissions are the most suitable
Healthy: Organic mattresses will give you the rest of mind you need you need as a consumer as you don’t have to worry about harmful chemicals that can be found in other mattresses. This is especially great for those who suffer from allergies and asthma.
Expensive: it is very expensive to source natural materials and this cost is translated in the price of the final product. Natural mattresses can cost several thousand dollars and this makes it inaccessible for a lot of people who desire it.
Heavy: Most organic mattresses make use of natural latex and this material is very dense and heavy. This adds to the longevity of the mattress but it can create an issue when it is time to move it around due to its weight.
Research needed: there various kinds of organic certifications and they all have different meanings and companies can be very deceitful in their language in order to lure you into making a purchase. A lot of the mattresses that claim to be natural aren’t in fact completely natural. And this can be an issue as most people aren’t willing to take the time to do the research.
What Makes a Mattress Organic?
A mattress is organic when it is made from natural organic materials. These materials can include organic latex, wool and cotton. It must also be produced without the use of certain chemicals and pesticides. For cotton it must not have any GMO (genetically modified organisms)
For the wool you have in a bed to be certified as organic, the sheep it is sourced from must have been fed on pastures and grazing on food that doesn’t have any pesticides. And for latex, the rubber trees must have been grown and harvested on plantations that are in compliance with USDA organic regulations
Why so popular?
In a world where the levels of toxins keep increasing and pollution is at an all-time high, we often look for natural remedies that are free of toxins and chemicals. And due to the fact that we spend so much time on the bed, organic beds are one of the easiest ways to cut down on toxins.
Organic bedding also has hypoallergenic properties and with the prevalence of asthma and allergies especially in children, you need to get a mattress that will accommodate their needs and ensure they do not get any further irritations or allergies.
Why are organic beds more expensive?
You can pay an extra 30% to 300% for an organic mattress. But why is this so? There are some reasons below:
- Rarer materials: some of the natural materials used in organic mattresses are rare and difficult to source and this is why they are not produced on the same scale as the conventional cotton. This drives prices up.
- Production process: there are many steps involved with the production of organic mattresses and careful processes have to be followed.
- Social responsibility: with organic bedding, companies have to pay higher wages and incur additional overhead and this cost gets transferred to the final product.
- Vendor compliance: in order to get the certification of being organic, manufactures can only get their items from specific vendors and this drives up the prices also.
What is the difference between an organic and non-organic and ecofriendly bed?
The first thing is to keep an eye out for buzz words like ecofriendly. These words do not have any official certification to back them up and no specific criteria is adhered to. Any company can say their product is ecofriendly especially when they have any element of the product that is natural.
Organic and non-organic can be a little easier to differentiate. This simply means that one is made from a specified percentage of organic materials while the other is not. A non-organic bed will usually have chemicals in them and these can include fossil fuels and this is not acceptable in an organic mattress
Are they safe for the little ones?
If you have a baby or a toddler in the house, an organic mattress is your best option. Find one that is Green Guard Gold certified as this is the highest certification for an infant bedding. One thing to be attentive abut is the level of firmness especially when you have an infant. If the baby is not fully mobile at the time, meaning thy can roll over on their own, there is an added risk of suffocation when you sue the soft and fluffy beds.
Understanding what you are sleeping on as being organic and free of harmful chemicals and toxins can be very relieving. What’s even better is finding one within your price budget. A good night rest is just as important as eating healthy and there is no reason why you should settle for less when you have so many safe and healthy options available.
Deciding to go organic is a huge step for yourself and for the planet. If you have any additional questions or issues, please get in touch with us. Any tips or raves about your new natural bed? Please share with us in the comment section.
Important Additional Information
Understanding the Different Certifications
This certification is meant for foam based products and these include mattresses, bedding products such as toppers and pillows and upholstered furniture. The procedure for testing the content, emission and durability falls under this certification
When a mattress is CertiPUR-US certified then you can be confident that there is none of the following constituents
Fire retardant chemicals
Mercury, lead and heavy metals
They also reduce the amount of VOCs that can be found in the products. This precautionary measure is necessary to ensure better quality of air. However you should understand that it can be up to .5 parts per million which is enough to give off that initial odor when new.
A lot of beds in the US whether organic or not will have the CertiPUR-US certification and we recommend that any mattress you opt for should at least have this certification.
The OEKO-TEX Certification is a world renowned certification for textile products and it looks closely at every stage of production from the point of sourcing raw materials to processing to finished goods. For mattresses and bedding, the materials can include yarns, fabrics, buttons, zippers, threads and labels.
This certification became important mainly because finished foods were being manufactured in various countries around the world due to the new global economy. Every country has its own standards and regulations so being able to hold every component of any product to the same standard is necessary. Like the CertiPUR-US standards, the OEKO-TEX certification ensures that there is no formaldehyde and heavy metals present. It also goes further to bar any distinction for other chemicals they may deem harmful even if there is no legal regulation restricting their use.
As companies move production of the products, this new OEKO-TEX certification is crucial. Just like other certifications, this one also has a validity period. This certificate is valid for only 12 months and within that time frame, manufacturers can be audited to see if they comply at any point.
This certification is usually abbreviated as OE-100 and OE blended. Beginning in 2014, they phased out this and replaced it with the organic content standard or COS. The difference between the OE-100 and OE Blended is in the amount of organic fiber that’s in the item. For any product to be compliant with an OE-100 certification, it will need to have 100% organic fiber material and the blended distinction means that there is a couple of other materials which will include non-organic ones where there needs to be 5% organic cotton.
Global Organic Textile Standard
This certification caters for the environment and the human aspect of the production of textile. This is meant to ensure that materials keep their organic integrity from material harvest to production and everything in between. The minimum level to qualify for this certification is 70% organic fiber and this leaves us to wonder what the other 30% contains. The production system must include a wastewater treatment plant that is fully functional if they are doing what needs to be done with wet processing
To get the certification, a textile manufacturer is subjected to an in depth inspection which includes examining the integrity and distinction of organic and non-organic materials, inspection of dyes and chemicals and discussions with workers to establish the quality of treatment and safety standards.
This certification is a German company that is focused mainly on emission testing. If you know about the new mattress or new car small that we have all come to accept, there is the possibility that there are toxins in the products that give off these smells that could very well harm us in the long run. The Eco-Institut examines the compositions of these emissions and will only give certification if the products are safe.
The company has over 90 test chambers and they will put the mattress through rigorous testing before issuing certification. These are some of the things they test for
- Harmful emissions
- Environmental pollutants
- Presence of heavy metals
- Use of flame retardants and phthalates
- Overpowering odors
- Visual quality inspection
Toxic load and ecological impact
When a company makes application for this certification and they fail, Eco-Institut will work closely with them to ensure that they get their product up to the required quality.
Flammability Standards and Flame Retardants
In 2007, the consumer product safety commission (CPSC) passed a new standard that aimed at mattresses. Under this current regulation, mattresses made in the USA must be flame and fire resistant. This original law aimed at bringing down the number of deaths as a result of fires in bed. A lot of the mattress manufacturers have turned to chemical flame retardants to fix this issue which is a serious health risk for humans.
The most harmful flame retardants that have been used in mattresses are polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs which have been linked to issues with the liver, thyroid and neuro developmental. PBDEs are monitors by the Environmental Protection Agency and they have been banned in Maine and Washington State.
A truly green mattress will not have any chemical flame retardants and most of the models available feature fire sticks that will act as a barrier to flame. Fire socks are usually produced from silica but some of the mattresses in the market today are made from more natural materials like wool or thistle. Kevlar is another material that needs no chemical treatment that may also be used. In any instance, a chemical free fire sock is classed much greener and healthier for us humans than any other flame retardant.
