Weighted blankets have become a sensation in the world of sleep accessories, and if you have never tried one for yourself, there is no time quite like the present. Of course, not everyone is a fan. Those who do enjoy sleeping under a weighted blanket, though, have found that it can relieve insomnia, anxiety, and depression, among other maladies. Science seems to support this anecdotal evidence as well: it is possible that weighted blankets increase hormone levels in the body and thus make for a deeper, more refreshing sleep. Weighted blankets become more and more popular with every passing year, and as they do, it is worth brushing up on just what they can do (and how you can pick the best weighted blanket for yourself!).

As there are with all blankets, there are many differences from each weighted blanket to the next one. You can find weighted blankets in a variety of sizes, colors, styles, weights, and even added features. Let's take a look at what makes them special and why some people (younger children and even a subsection of adults) ought to avoid weighted blankets altogether. By the end of this guide, you will be a true expert in the best weighted blankets, you will know how to tell the difference between weighted blankets, and you should have a more solid idea as to whether or not they are right for you!

The Best Weighted Blankets Buying Guide

Weighted blankets are the favorites of people who understand their benefits. Because of the individual needs and roles they play in people’s health they are specially made with materials such as discs, beads, pellets of polyfill or glass instead of using cotton to create the special effects. While some materials do the weighting, the best weighted blankets also contain polyester fibers to make them softer. When they cover the body, it feels like the body is being hugged. This makes the body relaxed, which helps to alleviate stress. Therefore you feel comfortable due to the gentle pressure.

A weighted blanket can weight up to 30 pounds - considerably more than typical comforters, quilts, and duvets. It helps to improve the quality of sleep as it promotes secretion of melatonin needed for natural rest and stimulates the production of happiness hormones which calm and relax the nerves.

Today you will find different types of products on the market with some available in many weights suitable for different sleepers. Some are foldable to distribute the pressure according to user preferences. They are available at varying prices according to the make and design. Typically the price of one of the best weighted blankets goes from $100 to $300 according to the quality.

In this guide we will examine how these blankets work, discuss their standard design, and share useful buying tips. We will conclude by picking the favorite brand currently on the market.

Weighted Blankets Improve Sleep

If you are struggling to accept the fact that the best weighted blanket can improve sleep, you are not alone; but it’s time to change your doubt! They contain elements capable of stimulating the body to release sleep hormones; that is why they are not ordinary! Because they are weighted, these blankets gently pressure the body causing it to feel grounded and secured making it fall into a deep relaxing sleep.

Deep Touch Pressure Stimulation as the blanket is known medically; the vital body points are the target of the blanket where it triggers the sleep causing hormones. The release of the hormones activates the feeling of calm and safety for the individual and helps to fall asleep effortlessly.

The term grounding which refers to the feeling caused by a weighted blanket has been proven to decrease cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol is a steroid hormone hazardous to sleep, especially when it is produced later in the day or late at night. Grounding also helps the body to produce melatonin, a hormone that brings the body into a state of utter relaxation.

The best weighted blankets are powerful tools for individuals who are upset, anxious, or at the point of losing control. They do the job by providing input to deep pressure touch receptors in the body. This explains why sleeping under such blanket feels like getting a firm hug.

Weighted blankets provide comfort, relief, and can supplement sensory disorder therapy for insomnia, sensory integration disorders, the ADHD spectrum, sleeping disorders, autism, Restless Leg Syndrome, and Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.

What You Should Know About Using A Weighted Blanket

Not everyone should use a weighted blanket. Before some people can use one of the best weighted blanket they must obtain a recommendation from a medical practitioner. When are they not right for you? If you fall into these groups:

People with respiratory issues: For the average person breathing requires space - breathing space. People who have difficulty with breathing may feel cramped by the heavy weight of the blanket. This is why a doctor's recommendation should be obtained if people in this group want to use a weighted blanket.

Children under 8: Such blankets could be risky for children under 8. Using them should be based strictly on a doctor's recommendation.

People suffering from claustrophobia: The weight of the blanket could make people with this condition feel crowded.

People with cardiovascular issues: It might not be advisable to use a weighted blanket because its extra weight may affect blood flow or the heart.

People who have hot flushes: Weighted blankets can add heat, as they retain heat. It is advisable to see a doctor for guidance if you are planning to invest in such a product.

The Advantages of Weighted Blankets

They help people to sleep better:

Reduces levels of cortisol. Grounding decreases the secretion of cortisol (a hormone triggered by stress). Although cortisol is not terrible, its production at night can hinder the release of melatonin and negatively affect the quality of sleep.

Boosts production of melatonin. Natural light triggers melatonin, resulting in the individual feeling relaxed for a wakeful morning. The manufacture of less melatonin is synonymous with insomnia, leading to difficulty in getting sleep and problems with continuation of sleep. Consequently users of such blankets for insomnia and related conditions associated with low production of melatonin experience remarkable sleep enhancement.

Activates good feeling hormones. The use of the best weighted blanket stimulates the production of serotonin, dopamine, and other ‘happiness’ hormones. These hormones calm the body and relax the nerves. Weighted blankets also support the production of oxytocin - a hormone triggered by hugging.

Reduces sleepwalking. Inefficient or disrupted sleep can result in sleepwalking in children and adults. Weighted blankets make people adequately relaxed before falling asleep. This causes deeper sleep and restful nights. Thus mostly kids and teenage sleepwalkers find the product helpful.

There are many other benefits of weighted blankets. Sometimes dentists recommend them to their patients before tests to reduce stress. Many physicians have discovered that both adults and children suffering from specific health issues may also benefit from the best weighted blankets to calm their nerves. A few of such medical conditions are listed below:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): There are many reasons why this blanket will improve autistic conditions, especially in children with ASD who typically have reduced or insufficient levels of melatonin and serotonin. Therefore such individuals will suffer from sleeplessness and may also suffer from anxiety at night (especially if he or she is a child).

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Children experiencing ADHD usually show poor academic performance, and to make matters worse, may also have sleepless nights. A correctly used weighted blanket will improve their sleep and boost learning abilities, which will result in a better academic performance.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Similarly to ASD, PTSD also reduces the production of serotonin. A weighted blanket increases the production of serotonin and improves sleep. By so doing the blanket eliminates the symptoms of PTSD and enhances the quality of sleep.

According to medical researchers many other conditions can be improved by using the product. These conditions include depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, restless legs syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Types and Specific Uses of Weighted Blankets

Blankets vary in construction and weight. Below are the types you will come across on the market.

Box construction - like a down-filled comforter, the design of each compartment has weighted materials such as poly pellets, glass beads, or polyfill to treat a variety of disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, insomnia, ADHD, OCD, environmental stress, and extended anxiety. Many DIY blankets are filled with products such as rice or beans that can degrade with time.

Channel-construction - a channel compartment that encloses the material. This construction allows the weighted element to be evenly distributed through the blanket so that when it drapes over the sleeper’s body, the weight is spread appropriately. The channels allow less movement of the weighting material and consequently the sensory stimulation is more soothing and softer. It is suitable for people with physical defenses receptive to new and changing sensory impressions.

DIY Blankets - as a down comforter can be put in a material shell, several DIY weighted blankets come with a washable external layer tailored by pattern, shade, or fabric texture. Researchers declare that pressure on the body around de`nite region triggers the release of a chemical in the brain such as serotonin that improves the mood, thereby triggering a reduction in stress and anxiety.

Fully sewn blankets - several weighted blankets come entirely sewn together. That makes them washable, but the cover isn’t detachable. The internal materials are prominently most considered. These blankets can aid the release of the sleep hormone melatonin and improve the sleep cycle. This hormone is connected to the production of serotonin and the pressure that triggers the chemical will in due course increase the production of melatonin.

Sizes of Weighted Blankets

Two factors determine the size of the best weighted blanket: the size of the user and how the user plans to use it. We usually recommend the small size for children up to 6 years of age. For children between 6 and 12 we typically recommend the medium size. A large size is best for taller teenagers and adults.

A crucial point to keep in mind is that the weighted blanket fits the body — you are not buying it for a bed, but for a person. In contrast to a regular comforter or quilt, the product is not meant to hang over the sides of the bed. If you allow it to drape down or hang over the bed, the weight will pull the blanket down. This could result in a wrestling match with the blanket because it will keep slipping to the floor and disturb the person’s sleep. For best results choose a blanket according to the body size, not the mattress.

The best weighted blankets for babies, toddlers, and children up to 6 years of age are approx. 34² x 50². Medium weighted blankets are approximately 38² x 62² and will fit children from 6 to 12 years to about an average size adult. Blankets perfect for taller teens and adults measure about 38² x 72.²

If you are a large person who tosses and turns a lot or a couple wanting to share the blanket, consider a full or queen size. An oversized product will continually drop off the edge of the bed and you will be trying to drag its weight back up on the bed. Also be mindful of kids and adults who like to carry their blankets around for use on the couch, in the car, etc. for calming and choose a blanket that will be comfortable to carry.

Notable Features of Weighted Blankets

The best weighted blanket is typically made of materials such as steel beads, plastic, or glass, which are evenly distributed to balance the weight of the blanket. Generally the beads are silent to avoid disturbing you during sleep. Some products contain weighted filling items such as glass sand instead of beads.

Weighted blankets also feature fabric stuffing to act as cushioning to prevent direct contact between the user and the weighting materials. This padding may be made of polyester, cotton, chenille, or fleece. These blankets are sometimes made to resist water and may contain moisture-wicking components in the fabric padding.

Typically weighted blankets have fabric covers that are detachable for washing or fixed, requiring the user to wash the whole blanket. These covers may be made of natural fibers, e.g. wool or cotton; synthetic fibers, e.g. fabric blends (a combination of natural and synthetic fibers); rayon; or polyester. Natural fiber-based products are very breathable and cool, although they are the most expensive. On the other hand synthetic materials such as polyester cost less, but are not as breathable and cool as the naturals.

There are design elements to look for in the best weighted blanket. This section will acquaint you with the specifics and make you an educated consumer. Below are other characteristics which the product may have:

Weight and its distribution: Most blankets weigh 5 pounds to 30 pounds. Adults will feel comfortable with the best weighed blanket that weigh around 10 percent of their body weight. This is why manufacturers make a variety of weights of weighted blankets. However, some models come in custom weights to suit a wide range of users. These models are foldable to increase or decrease the weight of the blanket, thus allowing it to fit users of all sizes.

Size: Heavier blankets are typically longer and wider compared to lighter ones. Most models are available in measurements comparable to the dimensions of a mattress, e.g. 60” by 80”, which equals to a queen size.

Inner clasps: Several products come with clasps in the covers to avoid the internal blanket clustering within the coverlet and losing shape.

Filling materials: The best weighted blankets contain beads made of plastic, glass, or both.

Cover: Some weighted blankets don't come with a cover, others do. Covers contain materials that give them a soft, warm, or breathable quality. It depends on what you want. Buying the best one for you will surely make your sleep comfortable. Some of the models also come with hooks and hoops that can be attached to a cover; this is advantageous in that they keep the blanket in place when you sleep.

Color and design: This is more dependent on personal taste. Weighted blankets have simple, others elaborate designs.

Sleep trial: Not all products will be right for you. In order to find the best one you might have to go through a process of trial and error. Luckily  most companies have a sleep trial scheme that spans 30 days. You can request a refund within 30 days if the chosen model does not match your requirements. Most sellers on Amazon offer the 30-day scheme.

Seller’s reputation: You may find weighted blankets from independent sellers at a lower price than ones from well known brands. The lower price is an obvious advantage. But the problem is that you cannot assess the durability and quality because they do not have tracked records.

Cleaning: Some of the best weighted blankets can be washed in a machine, but it is better to dry clean them to prolong their durability.

Many companies make weighted blankets, although there are models that local craftspeople make and sell on websites such as Etsy.com. Products manufactured and sold by companies are usually of better quality and reasonable durability with a stated defect guarantee. Weighted blankets from local craftspeople typically have lower quality and no warranty against defects, but are cheaper.

What to Look at Before Buying a Weighted Blanket

You will know the best weighted blanket for you by looking closely at these features:

Material and construction:

Blankets are available in various materials, weights, and colors. On average they weigh between 2 and 24 pounds.

It might be a little difficult to know the appropriate weighted blanket for you and consider your taste. But thankfully most companies have a guarantee of 7-30 days which allows you to test which one is right for you. The best weighted blankets will fall between 2 and 25 pounds. And it all depends on the weight; the heavier the blanket, the bigger it will be.

Usually you should go for the product that’s 10% of your weight plus more weight if you want to buy for children. For instance, a 40-pound child would be fine with a 6-pound blanket. Most manufacturers provide a comprehensive guide on their websites.

If you want a model that will give you warmth, a blanket without a polyfill is the one you should go for. When getting a blanket for adults, one with weighty cotton or flannel will do.

Colors and patterns depend on personal taste. Generally blankets come in gray, blue, or neutral tones. Both adults and children can get the right patterned blankets from custom-blanket makers, as they have them in varieties.

Comfort and durability:

If you're looking for comfort in your best weighted blanket, prioritize warmth, stress/pain relief, back/body support, and breathability. Experts advise that it is better to buy a product that will make you feel comfortable, as the wrong one can deprive you of sleep. Seek one that will allow spinal alignment.

A heavier model is better if you suffer from anxiety. Generally a weighted blanket helps to stimulate the release of serotonin. Serotonin is a powerful hormone that enables you to relax and fall asleep. It is similar to melatonin, another hormone crucial in sleep.

You can best safeguard your weighted blanket by using a cover. If you are to wash and dry your blanket, read how to do so in the guidelines provided by the maker.

You could also buy a duvet to protect the blanket. This will make it easier as you’ll only wash the cover. You can put a blanket on your body if you note signs of restlessness.

It is important to confirm the warranty. The best weighted blankets usually come with some years of warranty. Concentrate on useful certification. Check if the product requires regular maintenance as you will be using it for long.

Generally look for materials that could be potentially damaging to health.

Health benefits:

People suffering from Restless Legs Syndrome can wrap a small weighted blanket around their legs before sleeping. It can give relief to people battling with sleeplessness or anxiety. During the day a small weighted blanket around your shoulders could enhance your focus and give you a sense of tranquility. It might help children with sensory issues or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) with concentration and focus. It is better to buy a lighter model, not with 10% of the body weight.

Generally people suffering from sleeplessness, anxiety, autism, sensory disorders, Restless Leg Syndrome, and even fibromyalgia find weighted blankets useful.

Essential Guidelines for Shoppers for Weighted Blankets

Are you looking to buy the best weighted blanket and evaluating different models? Below are the factors to consider:

Your budget: Company-sourced weighted blankets are sold for at least $100. Products from private sellers who use websites like Etsy.com may have lower prices, but may not have guarantees and quality as good as that of the company-sourced ones.

Your weight: The weight of your blanket depends on your body weight. According to surveys people are very comfortable with blankets that weigh between 5 and 10 percent of their body weight. However, it is best to try before knowing which model will suit you. And consider that the ideal blanket may no longer be suitable if you lose or gain weight.

If your child will use the blanket: Sleep experts say that the best weighted blankets for children are most comfortable when they weigh 10% of the child’s body weight. They are not advisable for children of eight years and less for safety reasons.

If you have medical conditions that do not support weighted blankets: Some people may not feel comfortable under such blankets due to issues such as claustrophobia, menopause, respiratory, and circulatory problems.

The size of the blanket: As several sleepers prefer models that minimally cover their bodies, other users enjoy weighted blankets with full coverage. Note that the weight of a product increases with its dimensions. Thus the larger it is, the heavier it is. So you might need to sacrifice weight and length to get the correct amount of weight from a weighted blanket.

If you are a warm sleeper: a lot of people get very hot in sleep. It may be because of their body heat or the type of mattress they sleep on; latex and foam sleep hotter than spring mattresses. Natural fiber-based weighted blankets such as wool and cotton are more comforting than synthetic-based products such as polyester or rayon.  Thus people who get hot in sleep should opt for natural fiber weighted blankets to regulate temperature.

If the best weighted blanket has a cover: Check the list of the product features. Sometimes models sell the covers different from blankets.

The color: The color preference for covers is solely for aesthetics. Several models offer colors to suit a wide range of people’s tastes.

If the blanket comes with a warranty or trial offer: If you buy your product from a company, you will not only be given a guarantee against defect, but also a free trial which will enable you to send the blanket back for a refund if it doesn’t satisfy you in a given period of time. Nevertheless, if you buy from private sellers, you may not get any of these services.

How Heavy Should A Weighted Blanket Be?

There are several factors to consider when selecting the best weighted blanket, but individual preference takes precedence. Some individuals prefer heavy weighted blankets, others prefer light ones.

Here are some things that will help you select the best product:

Toddlers: It is not recommended that children younger than a year use weighted blankets. A health practitioner should be consulted before selecting a blanket for children between the ages of one and six years of age. Calculate 10% of their body weight and add a pound.

Elementary schoolchildren (6-12 years): A medium-sized model is best for children of this age. Calculate 10% of their weight and add 2 pounds to get the best weighted blanket for them.

Teenagers and adults: A large weighted blanket is best for people 13 years old and older. Calculate 10% of their weight and add 3 pounds.

Full-sized weighted blanket: Full-sized weighted blankets are best for those who want to share their blankets with partners or those who are large. Full-sized models are also called queen size weighted blankets. They are also good for those who turn a lot at night.

How to Maintain a Weighted Blanket

Weighted blankets require different maintenance and washing techniques. But regardless of their fabric, there are guidelines that will help you get the best out of your weighted blanket.

Washing weighted blankets: You must be careful when washing weighted blankets. Do not mix them with other clothes when washing them as you risk damaging them. Don’t wash them with chlorine bleach, fabric softener, nor strong detergents. Chlorine bleach will break down the fibers in the fabric of the product and fabric softeners will build up in the blanket and make it scratchy and rough. You can use nonchlorine bleach and gentle detergents.

Drying weighted blankets: Weighted blankets should be spread over a tub or laundry line to prevent them from losing their shape.

Ironing: Don’t ever iron a weighted blanket.

How to Wash Different Weighted Blanket Fabrics

Minky: Minky fabrics wash easily and come out soft. Don’t wash them with fabric softeners.

Fleece: Soak your fleece weighted blanket for about half an hour, wash it in warm water, and dry it on low heat.

Cotton: Wash cotton in a machine in cold or warm water and dry it on medium or low heat. If your best weighted blanket is made of dark or sharp colors that may run, wash them first in cold water mixed with a cup of salt to prevent the colors from running.

If your blanket has stubborn stains, use nonchlorine bleach on them. Do not use chlorine bleach.

Weighted Blanket Alleviates the Symptoms of the Sensory Processing Disorder

Using weighted blankets to treat the symptoms of the sensory processing disorder is now becoming very popular. The symptoms of the sensory processing disorder include difficulty in interpreting information relating to their senses, which includes the ability to hear, feel, taste, and see. This symptom affects both young and old people.

Young children sometimes grow slowly, so if they have these symptoms it might be hard for their parents to notice or for the children to say what is bothering them. Thus it can be cumbersome to recognize the symptoms of the sensory processing disorder in children.

Our senses send us information and we interpret it without knowing. For instance, when you walk through an amusement park, you hear a lot of noises from all directions. When you are watching TV, your eyes receive different light signals and colors as motion takes place on the screen. These are all typical occurrences in our everyday lives.

The brains of people with the sensory processing disorder cannot interpret the information in an ordinary manner. Some professionals compare such situation to a mental traffic jam; the brain receives signals, but they cluster up and jam together. The brain tries to straighten this information out and  become so confused that the individual in question will start to feel anxious and overwhelmed. If the person is a child, he or she will end up having problems with academic and social performance.

Although there is no definite cure for the sensory processing disorder, there are several management techniques for people living with the condition. According to researchers a firm but gentle hugging sensation can help these people to feel calmer. This method is called deep touch pressure therapy and is synonymous to a firm full body cuddle.

Deep touch pressure therapy can usually be performed by therapists and other health professionals. There are also ways in which people can practice it at home or at school by using one of the best weighted blankets. They give them enough consistent pressure to help reduce anxiety.

Are Weighted Blankets Good for More Than Just the Sensory Processing Disorder? Yes!

Insomnia and anxiety are parts of almost every health condition and as weighted blankets help reduce insomnia and fear, they improve many health conditions. For instance, the best weighted blanket lessens the symptoms of ADHD. Some people also use them to alleviate insomnia, while they also improve conditions relating to stress.

The use of weighted blankets may also help some sensory processing disorders related to autism and Asperger's syndrome. According to research published in the Pediatrics journal, children who have autism and their parents used such blankets.

Older caregivers usually mention that these blankets help their older loved ones sleep better and longer. Therefore if you have a relative with dementia or age-related insomnia, getting the best weighted blanket for the person might reduce the symptoms and induce comfortable sleep.

Anybody can use a weighted blanket; you don’t have to suffer from any health condition. Indeed, everybody will like a comfortable hugging blanket at night. Using them at night can translate to a more relaxing and cozy sleep, which is what you need after all the stress of the day.

Weighted Blankets Help Treat Anxiety and Insomnia

Some studies have shown how weighted blankets affect adults with anxiety and insomnia. For instance, research in the Journal of Sleep Medicine & Disorders in 2015 explained that individuals who used them slept longer and moved less at night compared to when they used traditional blankets. Participants fell asleep more easily with weighted blankets and felt happier when they woke up.

A research of 32 people was conducted in 2006 by Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. The study showed that 63% of the individuals were less anxious after using weighted blankets for sleep. 78% were more relaxed than when they didn’t use the product. The research proved that using best weighted blankets was safe for adults, as it did not have any impact on blood pressure and pulse.

Read reviews online and compare features of different models that you think would help you relax if you want to try a weighted blanket. The features that will help you relax depend on the softness or breathability of the material. For instance, you might want a blanket with inbuilt aromatherapy to make it feel like a spa.

Many of us have a lot of worries and sleepless nights. Thus it is advisable to adopt healthy measures to address such issues. For instance, you can perform deep breathing exercises, take hot showers, slide into a comfortable favorite sweater, or include the best weighted blanket on your list.

You should also opt for a blanket that is up to 10% of your body weight. The 2006 study stated that the patients preferred models that weighed at least 10 percent of their weight. However, opting for a heavier blanket may translate into discomfort and difficulty in using the mattress. Note that you should not use weighted blankets to replace therapies for anxiety or insomnia.

If you are in such therapy, consult your doctor or therapist before getting a blanket.  For some people, for instance ones suffering from claustrophobia or panic attacks the blankets may worsen the condition.

Weighted blankets Help College Students

High levels of anxiety amongst college students are a regular thing, especially for newer students who are not used to being away from home. They may also not be used to roommates and deadlines. They may even have tough times trying to straighten out their careers and relationships.

An anxious person will be restless, fidget, bite his fingernails, and often talk very fast without pausing for breath.

Using the best weighted blanket might help such a person become calmer and therefore be able to sit and think patiently. Patient thinking improves concentration and emotional stability. That drastically reduces anxiety.

Weighted Blankets Help Veterans

Veterans usually return from service with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It might develop due to exposure to shock or hazardous circumstances.

Weighted Blankets for Kids

Maybe you want to get weighted blankets for your children. Yes, they will improve the quality of your children’s sleep. The constant pressure the blanket exerts on the body can translate into deep relaxing sleep that will result in a drastic reduction of anxiety.

Sleeplessness in some children and adults results from a problem with the brain and a weak ability of the individual’s body to relax. People who sleep deeply do not understand how much work is put into sleeping, but it is all owing to the mind and body preparing for sleep. As it is not very easy to control the brain, it is easier to solve the problem on the physical plane, therefore using the best weighed blanket can minimize the problem by helping children sleep easily.

Sensory processing may be a cause of or contributing factor to the difficulty experienced when switching between arousal levels of the individual.

Best weighted blankets provide proprioceptive and tactile pressure which is primarily relaxing. Thus they can be used to calm the nerves at any time, not just during sleep.

Note:

  • Do not use a weighted blanket for a child younger than two years.
  • Only use a product for your child if he or she can lift it off the body and carry it without help.
  • Your child should be old enough to understand that the blanket must not cover the neck or head.
  • Do not use a weighted blanket on your child if he or she has an open wound.
  • Be careful when using a weighted blanket intended for another person.
  • Do not use weighted blankets to restrain your child.

How to Use a Weighted Blanket for Kids?

You may already know how to put the best weighted blanket over your child. Here are a few more tips!

  • Never force a weighted blanket on our child. Demonstrate it by putting it on yourself and encourage the child. We are talking about sensory input, and your child may find such blanket painful.
  • When you are showing the product to your child for the first time, start by drawing it from his or her feet towards the chest. Lay it and ask for their opinion!
  • Try to wrap a weighted blanket around your children while they sit on the couch or floor to play, read, etc.

Weighted Blankets for Autism, Children, or Adults

Some children cannot interpret information from their senses like their counterparts. They struggle to do so or avoid doing so. Many children require special care concerning their sensory performance. The best weighted blankets can help such children.

The level of sensory care an individual needs varies from person to person irrespective of whether the person has sensory disorders or not. So using weighted blankets is one of the best choices an individual can make as he or she saves a lot of energy on maintaining health and wellbeing.

As it is evident that individuals with or without sensory disorders, autism, or SPD may have improved sleep quality with the best weighted blankets, they may not improve sleep quality at all.

It is crucial to ensure that your child likes the blanket even if it would take a bit of time to do so. If your child turns out to not like it, s/he will not use it and it will be impossible to make him/her like it.

How will you know if your child will respond to a weighted blanket:

  • If he or she likes to sleep or lay under a heap of blankets or heavy materials
  • If he or she enjoys crawling into tight spaces or covered areas
  • If he or she cannot comfortably sleep or sit even when calm
  • If he or she likes to wear heavy clothes or sweaters.

How will you know if your child may not respond to a weighted blanket:

  • If he or she is very sensitive to touch
  • If he or she doesn’t like to sleep under thick fabrics or materials.

This list is not definitive, but if your child is old enough, you should show them illustrations of the best weighted blanket online and describe its texture and usage. Ask them for their opinions. Children are usually honest about their needs. If you are part of a professional therapist team, enquire whether they have anyone available for a short trial.

Very interesting list of the best-weighted blanket. I’ve seen many people swear by them for a good night’s sleep

Amanda Holmes · April 28, 2019 at 5:58 am

The very first time I saw the ads for weighted blankets, I did not quite understand how they worked and I disregarded them immediately. But then, I had this severe anxiety that was making it difficult for me to sleep. Even when I managed to get some sleep, I found myself tossing and turning and I was always tired in the mornings even before I did anything for the day. Later I realized that I was able to sleep better with more blankets around and on top of me. Without them, I wouldn’t feel secure and calm enough to sleep. When I realized that I had gotten used to this habit, I finally remembered reading about weighted blankets and I decided to give it a try. And boy! It was awesome on my first try. I slept off immediately I got under it and I never felt more rested in my entire life. The only disadvantage is that the weighted blanket makes me want to continue sleeping even when I should get up and go to work. I am still trying to understand the science behind this product but I am thankful that I have this blanket to help me sleep better. I have a different model than on this best weighted blankets list but the descriptions sound so good that i might try one when I feel adventurous 🙂

I love the ZonLi weighted blanket absolutely and usually, I always have issues with falling asleep and sleeping through the night. I usually woke up every hour so at the end of the day, I was never able to get any real sleep. I was not entirely open to the idea of buying this blanket as I have put off the idea for some time. When I eventually bought it, my first night was a whole transformation. I don’t remember spending up to 30 minutes before I slept off. I only woke up twice and none of the two times was because I felt uncomfortable. From that first night up till not, I have slept well. Even my cat seems to enjoy getting under the blanket. Perhaps, it is because my legs stay in one place when I’m under the blanket and I no longer get to kick him off the bed whenever I move. Sometimes on the side, the blanket is a little bit heavy but since I will be sleeping, that does not seem to matter.

As a mental health therapist, I didn’t need anyone to convince me about how beneficial using weighted blanket is for ADHD, trauma and anxiety. I researched extensively about weighted blankets before I purchased it. I have seen many of my patients but poor quality blankets which did not improve their condition. But the Platinum Health Blanket is different in a way as it does not have plastic pellets. Instead it uses small glass weights. The beads also stay in one place which makes the weight consistent. You do not have to buy a separate cover as the blanket comes with one, and the cover is easily removable for washing. This also helps make sure it lasts long. My daughter has bipolar disorder, OCD and ADHD and since I bought this blanket, her condition has improved dramatically. She loves it so much and even when I tried to use it myself I couldn’t believe how comfortable I felt. I have Fibromyalgia myself and the blanket has reduced my symptoms as well as my restless leg syndrome. Now, I find it hard to sleep without it. Platinum Health Blanket works the best for me and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

I have always loved sleeping under heavy blankets and this is what made buy the ZonLi weighted blanket. The problem I had with having so much blankets on was the excessive warmth they provided. I opted for a weighted blanker instead and oh man, it has been an absolute blast. I have used it for just a week but my sleep has gotten better remarkably. It is heavy quite all right but it smothers me to sleep and if I ever wake up during the night, I sleep back off immediately. It also does not keep me too warm. It is just perfect. I have no idea if the blanket is capable of fixing all of the issues the manufacturer claims it can but so far, the weight is doing wonders for me. I feel more secure, properly tucked in and cozily snugged up. I would recommend this top-rated blanket to anyone except for people who are claustrophobic or feel smothered from sleeping under weight.

I loved the two blankets that I bought from YnM and I would not hesitate to suggest it to others who have issues with relaxing and getting good quality sleep. If your mind gets busy or uneasy whenever you are trying to get some sleep, having extra weight distributed all over your body can help calm your nerves and give you the feeling of protection. The YnM blankets are of the best available quality and I loved how they felt against my body especially the glass bead stuffing instead of the poly pellets that we are all used to. The price of these blankets are quite affordable compared to many other similar blankets so I think it is worth purchasing if you are having symptoms of depression, insomnia, ADHD, and anxiety.

I got the Quility Premium weighted blanket for my son who has anxiety problems once in a while. He weighs 106 lbs. and I bought the 12 lbs. weighted blanket for him. For the first few hours of using the blanket, I felt every bit of its awesomeness. It looks like it is well-made and it comes in a quality package. I also found out that it is odorless, warm and soft. It weighs less than what is recommended for my body weight but the blanket still helps me relax. If it holds up well as expected, I would definitely buy more. It comes with a cover on it which is a huge bonus I recommend this to anybody and you should know that this is an unsolicited review. I am only pleased with this product and since I check reviews before I buy any product myself, I am just trying to help other prospective buyers too.

One word to describe the Good Knight weighted blanket is “AMAZING.” I was not a huge fan of these blankets but since I kept having incessant bouts of insomnia and anxiety, and I was willing to try just about anything that works. The product did not disappoint me. I weight 165 lbs. and I ordered the 17 lbs. blanket. When I slept on it, it felt like the much needed hug that I have missed my entire life. Within five minutes, I was out like a light. My house has turned into a sleep house as my friends keep coming around to use this blanket so they can get good sleep. I’m even scared that they may steal it some time. The Good Knight blanket is the best for me and I can’t get over its awesomeness.

As someone who regularly gets fits of anxiety, I bought the Quility Premium weighted blanket with the expectations that falling asleep would be better for me and keep me comfortable when I sit at my desk or lie on the couch. I always had the feeling that one of these things could be of benefit to me but I did not know that I would come to rely on it so much. I checked out a lot of options and I am so happy I chose this weighted blanket. The fact that I can remove the cover and put it back on without stress is also something that I love so much. I can also tie the blanket to the cover so that the weight is evenly distributed. The best buy!

Amanda Reads · May 5, 2019 at 6:25 pm

Big and heavy blankets are really my thing and with all of the results from researches about how they can keep the body calm, now I have realized what the hype around my 20 lbs. blanket is. Although it does not feel fluff and thick like a duvet, its heavy weight delivers adequate comfort. I did not have any problem with leaking but I am not happy completely because the blanket gets too hot and I find it hard to sleep comfortably during the warmer months. I have removed it from my bed many times because it gives me a night of strange dreams and I like to sleep in a chilly environment given that I am very much warm-blooded. If you are always cold, this is the best option for you.

Sarah · May 7, 2019 at 5:37 pm

I bought a weighted blanket that is too heavy and too big but it is one of the best mistakes I have ever made. It hugs my body and it made me feel like I had no other problems in the world. Currently, the summer heat is getting in the way of things but by putting on some fans, I believe that problem should be sorted out. It was quite difficult getting the cover onto the blanket but after I got it right, I never had to struggle with it afterward. Another surprising thing was that my dog comfortably stayed put when she was placed on the blanket. On extra warm nights, it’s a bit heavy but that’s not a problem since it performs excellently when it is cooler.

Lisa · May 9, 2019 at 8:40 am

The Quility Premium Blanket totally blew me away. It is super comfortable and I do not feel hot whenever I use it. I have been living with waking up several times with night sweats but since I started using this weighted blanket a week ago, I have slept through every night as cool as I was when I hit the sheets. It also comes in the perfect size and weight. I love sleeping with a blanket on regardless of whether there is cold or not just because I love the weight of the blanket on my body. During summer, this might be a bit of an issue but while summer is not here yet, I will enjoy my Quility Premium Blanket to the fullest. I can use this blanket to either cover my body, my legs or my laps. It is versatile and I can use it with my children. I have anxiety and ADHD so the weight is quite comforting. It has changed things for me from the time I used to lie awake for more than two hours looking for sleep. Now I no longer have to go through that waiting period. The weighted beads do not shift around the blanket and are responsible for the quality that I derive from it. I wish it was cheaper but otherwise it’s the best weighted blanket you can find!

My Dr. Hart’s weighted blanket arrived in the morning in a nice shipping box. The 15 lbs. blanket came with a separate duvet and was sealed. I put the blanket in the soft duvet without much effort. Let me also point out that the process was easy and the duvet looks luxurious and feels soft to touch. The Dr. Hart’s weighted blanket covered my king-size bed and when I used it with my two daughters beneath the blanket, we slept off within ten minutes. I was not convinced because I thought we slept off as a result of being tired but the next afternoon that I tried it again, I slept off almost immediately. I didn’t need any further conviction. I effortlessly slept two times within a day. When my husband got home and he used the blanket, he fell asleep really quickly too and when I used it through the whole night, my sleep was the best I have had in a long time. Since that time, I have not slept a night without using this blanket. I fall asleep more quickly and on days that I use it throughout the night, I realized that I’m able to sleep more soundly. It is not too heavy so it does not make me feel claustrophobic. It also does not make noise when I shift under it. My back is bad and this has contributed to my inability to sleep well over the years but with this weighted blanket, even though it does not take away the pain in my back, it helps me sleep regardless of the pain I am feeling. I do not regret the money that I put on this product, it is the best weighted blanket on the market currently.

The ZonLi weighted blanket is one product that anybody would want to show off to all of their friends and family. You just have to make sure of two things; the person you are showing it to may want to take it for themselves and when you refuse, it may get in the way of your relationship with them. The second thing you should know is not throw the blanket over anybody that is trying it out so you do not injure or kill them. Lay it over them gently starting from their feet. Overall, this is a highly recommended product that is guaranteed to make you get better sleep and deeper sleep over the night. Add having a good pillow to this top weighted blanket, you are in for a treat.

The Dr. Hart weighted blanket is a top quality blanket made with strong stitching, solid construction and high-quality materials. Since I started using it, the quartz inside never clumped or distributed unevenly. I love how it weighs as it helps me sleep more restfully. There is a difference between when I used this blanket and when I was not using it. Usually I used to wake up with clenched jaws or stiff neck but since I started using the blanket, this tension in my neck and jaw has reduced. The only disadvantage is that I sleep hot and this blanket has not made things any better. However, I will be receiving a free organic cover soon with and that will take about 14 days. In all, this is a blanket I would recommend. The company is quite responsive and the customer service team is excellent as well. Considering the price of the blanket, it just makes sense that there is a team in the background that responds to complaints and questions. I wish the Dr. Hart comes in a variety of colors but this does not really matter as it’s still the best weighted blanket for me.

I bought the Platinum Health weighted blanket for my 8-year old daughter and on the very first night, I fell in love with the product. Even though I had my doubts and skepticism about it, I only went ahead because of its price. From the very first night that I used this product I have had my best nights of sleep. When my daughter used this product, she fell in love with it immediately especially with the fact that it is a pink minky fabric. The next morning, she had so much to say about the blanket. She only did not like the weight because she could not carry it with her around the house. I wish it costs less than its price but I still feel the price is worth it. Make sure you follow the manufactrer’s instructions for the best method of usage. Thank you for your best weighted blankets guide, it was useful!

I have used the Quility Premium blanket for about a month now and while the size is suitable for only one person, I have turned it around on my king-size bed so that it will be able to cover two people since it is turned sideways. When you lie under it all through the night, it is quite hot but whenever I lie under it, I fall asleep much faster and I stay asleep until morning. Two of my dogs have anxiety problems and they keep going in and out of the bed in a bid to get comfortable. But the moment I put the blanket over them, they slept through the night. This weighted blanket also comes with the cover which is a good thing. The cover also stays in place during use and it only takes unzipping to take it off for cleaning. Overall the Quility Premium weighted blanket is a top quality product, I highly recommend it.

I got the Sonno Zona weighted blanket as a birthday present for my mom some months ago and she keeps thanking me for it. She says it is the most comfortable blanket she has ever used and it helps her relax through her anxiety and also helps her sleep through the night restfully. I tested it myself and I felt like I was being hugged. It is just an awesome product. Although it is heavy and if you are getting it for someone as a gift, make sure they have the strength to carry it. Otherwise, just get them something lighter that delivers the same effect. I am pleased with this one regardless and would recommend it to anybody that cares, or doesn’t.
