The majority of children that suffer from sleep disorders either have allergies or are overweight. Sleep Apnea in children is becoming more and more common. Due to the fact that more children are now overweight from the foods they eat and the lack of exercise. The three main symptoms of sleep apnea in children are snoring, waking up scared and gasping for air. Sleep disorders in children can be scary and frustrating, especially when trying to explain the situation to your pediatrician. Many pediatricians misdiagnose children with sleep apnea.

Children that are overweight have a greater risk of developing sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a disorder that will cause the soft tissue in the back of the throat to block the airway and restrict breathing during the night. Children with sleep apnea will not get the rest needed that a healthy growing child needs. There are two important reasons sleep apnea needs to be diagnosed and treated. First, when sleep apnea occurs during the night the child’s body will not get the needed uninterrupted sleep to rejuvenate the body. The body, especially a growing body, needs at least nine complete hours of sleep. The second effect of having a sleep apnea episode is the brain is briefly not receiving oxygen. Studies have shown on children and adults there is a link between this and cardiovascular issues. Any lack of oxygen to the brain will cause a number of concerns like learning and memory problems.

Children don’t cook their own meals or make themselves sit in front of the television. Children need guidance to have a healthy lifestyle. Any child will benefit from eating healthy foods rich in vitamins like raw fruits and vegetables. Also, it is very important that children get at least 20 to 40 minutes of exercise every day.
