Sleeping Pills have diverse ways of functioning in the human body. While there some sleeping pills that target the part of the brain that is responsible for awareness, there are some that simply target the part of the brain that produces sleep hormones.

When it comes to OTC drugs for sleeping, there are two broad categories which include Diphenhydramine and Doxylamine.  It is worth mentioning that these medications are not really intended for drowsiness; however, you are expected to feel sleepy as an offshoot.

Of the aforementioned medications, Diphenhydramine is quite popular amongst users because it breaks down faster and its effect is more immediate when compared with Doxylamine. This attribute is particularly relevant when dealing with the aftermath of excessive alcohol intake. However, the downside to Diphenhydramine is that the body can quickly become resistant to the drug. On the other hand, the use of Doxylamine as a sleeping pill tends to work in even after long-term use. Doxylamine is a significantly stronger sleeping pill and will remain effective anytime it is taken. However, the downside to this sleeping pill is that you will still feel sleepy the following day and coffee won't do anything to help the situation.

Over the counter (OTC) sleep aids often contain diphenhydramine, which is used to treat allergy symptoms. One of the side effects of diphenhydramine is drowsiness, which is why it’s used in many popular OTC sleep aids. Side effects of over the counter sleep aids containing diphenhydramine include dry mouth, constipation, and nausea.

Prescription sleep aids may also be an option. There are different classifications of prescription sleep meds including benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines are an older type of sleeping pill that targets various types of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the brain that promote sleep. But they should be used with caution since they can be addictive. Side effects including dizziness, muscle weakness, and nausea are possible.

The Best Sleeping Pills

What Makes OTC Sleeping Pills Preferred?

The major distinction between OTC sleeping pills and prescription sleeping pills stems from the convenience that comes with the former.  No one wants the hassle of booking an appointment with a physician when they are simply trying to get quality night time.

Just like recommended sleeping pills, OTC sleeping pills are equally potent in tackling insomnia. A common ingredient in OTC sleeping drugs is a substance known as an antihistamine which performs the function of lowering the impact of histamines. Resultantly, OTC sleeping pills are equally capable of creating instantaneous drowsiness. However, the real challenge with sleeping pills is the likelihood of being addicted.

Often times, there is a bodily and mental dependence that could stem from the use of sleeping pills. Individuals could actually become addicted to the use of sleeping drugs and may be unable to have a restful sleep without it. There is also the tiredness and fatigue that may punctuate the part of your day that should be spent doing things and being active.

Most recommended sleeping aids should be consumed for short durations and should be taken with careful monitoring from seasoned physicians in other to avoid addiction.  It can be argued, therefore,  that the best sleeping aid is OTC sleeping pills as opposed to prescription sleeping drugs.

OTC sleeping medications function in two ways, and this includes suppressing the production of certain hormones or by providing creating more of certain chemicals. Essentially, the persons who take an OTC sleeping pill will fall asleep because the presence of certain chemicals that prevents restful sleep from happening has been inhibited or by providing more certain chemicals that will induce sleep.

While inhibiting the production of certain hormones may seem like a good idea, its major downside is that it is more likely to cause addiction. On the other hand, supply the body with chemicals that may induce sleep is a preferred option. The reason is that the body tends to utilize what it requires and flush out the residue.

It should be noted that taking any sleeping pill for more than fourteen days in a row could have a negative impact on your overall health.

It comes highly recommended that you consult with a seasoned professional before you embark on the use of any sleeping pill. It is not always certain that OTC  drugs are the best sleep aid for you. For those that are not experiencing any noticeable improvement with OTC sleeping pills,  it is also advisable that they seek the help of a seasoned medical practitioner.
